GTA 6's wildlife is "native and otherwise", and in Florida that is a legal category
Game Informer's GTA 6 cover story covers wildlife "native and otherwise". In Florida, otherwise means invasive — and one of those animals is already on screen.
The most loaded phrase in Game Informer's GTA 6 cover reveal is three words long. Announcing issue 382 on Friday, senior associate editor Marcus Stewart wrote that his 14-page story with Rockstar's lead designers covers "the staggering amount of wildlife – native and otherwise – roaming Leonida on land, air, and sea." In a Florida game, otherwise is not a throwaway qualifier. It is a category the state legislates.
Nonnative is a status, not an adjective
Florida's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission opens its nonnative species page with a sentence that reads like a mission statement: "Nonnative species do not belong in Florida. Some do not cause many, if any, problems. Others, however, are invasive."
The green iguana is the clearest example, and the FWC's species profile files it under a two-word status: Nonnative Invasive. Iguanas are not protected in Florida except by anti-cruelty law. They can be humanely killed on private property with the owner's permission, and year-round without a permit or a hunting licence on 32 public lands in the south of the state. They went onto Florida's Prohibited list in April 2021. The FWC's list of what they do reads like environmental art direction for a GTA map: burrows that erode and collapse sidewalks, foundations, seawalls, berms and canal banks, and droppings left on docks, moored boats, porches, pool decks and inside the pools themselves.
They also arrived exactly where Rockstar set its game. The FWC records the first Florida reports in the 1960s in Hialeah, Coral Gables and Key Biscayne — Miami-Dade's southeastern coast, the geography Vice City is drawn on.
One of them is already in Rockstar's own screenshots
Rockstar has never published a species list for Leonida, but players have been cataloguing every animal visible in the official trailers and screenshots, and the running list includes a green iguana alongside the alligators, flamingos, pelicans, herons, spoonbills, dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, deer and the Florida panther. A boar is on the same list.
That pairing is the tell. Alligators and flamingos are what a studio puts in a Florida game to say Florida. An iguana on a Keys seawall is something else: a naturalised escapee from the pet trade that a South Florida native would clock instantly and nobody else would notice. The boar sits in the same bracket in the state's eyes — the FWC's wild hog page records hogs in all 67 counties, huntable year-round with landowner permission, no licence required, no size or bag limit, either sex.
Why wildlife is the thread to watch on the 29th
The cover story runs three threads: an advanced weather system built for Florida's less sunny days, the wildlife, and how Rockstar researched Miami. Two of those are texture. The animals are the one place where an accurate Leonida turns into something you can interact with, which is the lesson Rockstar taught itself with Red Dead Redemption 2's ecosystem — and whether hunting and fishing exist in GTA 6 is still unconfirmed.
It is also the first genuinely new information about the game in almost a month. Rockstar's last batch of fresh screenshots went up on September 1, and everything since has been merchandise: the album, the controllers, the $399.99 collector's box. The digital issue unlocks on Tuesday, September 29, 51 days before launch, with a dozen screenshots attached.
The question Stewart says he put to Rockstar is how Florida GTA 6 actually is. If the answer includes the animals the state is officially trying to remove, that is a better claim to accuracy than any flamingo.
