Don't expect GTA 6 Online news anytime soon

Jason Schreier says Take-Two is only talking about GTA 6 as a single-player game and has no plans to discuss the next GTA Online anytime soon.

Do not expect to hear about GTA 6's online mode before launch. In a video published on his YouTube channel on August 7, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier said Take-Two is only discussing GTA 6 as a single-player game: "They have not talked at all, and they are not planning to talk anytime soon, about what the new GTA Online will look like and what that recurring spend will look like."

The claim and what backs it

This is Schreier's account of his conversation with Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, not an official Rockstar statement. But it matches the visible record: two trailers, the pre-order pages and every official screenshot batch are about Jason, Lucia and Leonida, and Rockstar's own materials have not mentioned a new online mode at all.

Why the silence makes sense

The current GTA Online is the quiet engine of the whole company. Recurring player spending brought in roughly 78 percent of Take-Two's revenue in its latest fiscal year, and reported estimates — never confirmed by Take-Two — put GTA Online alone around half a billion dollars a year. None of that gets marketed until the $80 single-player sale has happened. Zelnick told Schreier the existing GTA Online will keep being supported after November 19.

Our read on launch day

History is probably the best guide. GTA 5 shipped on September 17, 2013 as a single-player game; GTA Online switched on two weeks later and then grew for a decade. If Take-Two is not even ready to describe the new online mode during the biggest marketing window it has ever had, launch week will belong to the campaign — and whatever replaces GTA Online will arrive on its own clock, after the Extended Look on August 27 and quite possibly after release.

From the same conversation: Zelnick said pre-orders have "vastly" beaten Take-Two's internal forecasts, and called the Extended Look a "meaty" look at actual gameplay.
