The patent trail behind GTA 6's obsessive driving detail
Take-Two patent filings describe door handles, gear shifts, pedals, mirrors and interrupted car-entry animations — signed by Rockstar's own engineers.
The clearest preview of how GTA 6's cars might feel is not a leak — it is the patent record. Filings surfaced by players on r/GTA6 in June describe, as catalogued by Vice, animation systems for smashing car windows, reaching for door handles, working the gear shift, handbrake and pedals, checking mirrors, using radios and switches, riding motorcycles, adjusting to different seat heights — and continuing a car-entry animation when another vehicle crashes into you mid-climb.
Signed by Rockstar's own people
The paper trail has real names on it. The most famous filing, US11071916B2 from 2021, covers NPC drivers that plan routes like individuals — rerouting around traffic instead of following painted lines — and its inventors, David Hynd and Simon Parr, are Rockstar engineers, with the patent held by parent company Take-Two. A September 2024 application describes "runtime retargeting": adapting character and object motion in real time to bodies of different heights and builds, which is exactly the kind of system the seat-height detail would need. And a former Rockstar programmer's since-deleted LinkedIn CV claimed work on a "next generation procedural breakable glass system for vehicles", spotted by players in March.
The honest caveats
No filing names GTA 6. Patents protect options, not promises, and companies routinely patent systems that never ship. Take-Two has filed plenty that fans mapped onto GTA before — procedural building interiors, NPC mood systems, anti-cheat schemes — and none of it is confirmed for this game.
What makes the vehicle batch worth taking seriously is convergence. When HipHopGamer claimed GTA 6's vehicle interactions are far more intricate than any previous GTA, he was describing — knowingly or not — what these filings spell out in patent language. The claims and the paperwork rhyme. The Extended Look on August 27 is where both get tested on camera.
