Miami Heat will play as Vice City the night before GTA 6 launches
The Heat drop their own name for a Vice City uniform against the Bucks on November 18, live on ESPN — and GTA 6's own basketball turns out to be playable.
On November 18, the evening before Grand Theft Auto VI comes out, the Miami Heat will stop being the Miami Heat. For one game against the Milwaukee Bucks at Kaseya Center they play as Vice City — a name they do not own, borrowed from a place that does not exist. New uniform, a court built for the night, 7pm ET tip-off, national broadcast on ESPN. The team announced it on Friday with Rockstar Games, calling it "a never-been-done-before event."
The arena was already a billboard
The roof above that court has carried a "Welcome to Vice City" sign since September 22, when a helicopter lowered the letters into place. It runs about 4,690 square feet on roughly 21,000 pounds of new steel, and Rockstar is paying Miami-Dade County $975,000 for it — a figure that stops $25,000 short of the $1 million threshold that would have forced a county commission vote. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava signed it under her own contracting authority, which Commissioner Oliver Gilbert III objected to on process grounds: "You could just do smaller purchases every time. That wouldn't make sense." The sign stays up until the later of one year or the last Heat home game of the season, April 11, 2027.
What the game night buys on top of that is motion. A sign is a sign; an NBA broadcast is two and a half hours of live national programming, wrapped in the colours of a product that goes on sale at midnight. Rockstar has spent this campaign almost entirely on surfaces it controls — trailers, the Newswire, its own store — plus concrete: the Miami signage, a mural going up in New York, posters on buildings. This is the first time it has stepped into somebody else's live broadcast window, and it did not have to buy the window. It bought a court wrap.
The name was already half theirs
The Heat did not invent Vice for this. They introduced it as their 2017-18 City Edition — fluorescent pink and blue, a script lifted from the old Miami Arena signage, the 1980s television version of the city rendered as sportswear. It outsold every other team's City Edition jersey, and kept going: Vice Nights, Sunset Vice, ViceWave, ViceVersa, revived again as recently as last season.
So both brands were drawn from the same well. Rockstar named a fictional Miami after the decade's image of the real one; the Heat sold a second identity out of the same material. On November 18 the team borrows the name back from the game, which is about as close as an invented place gets to existing.
And the basketball is real — a correction
We owe a correction on this, because yesterday, writing about the unannounced Vice City Manatees and Narcos merchandise sitting in Rockstar's store catalogue, we wrote that the activities Rockstar has described include no basketball. That went too far. Basketball is in Grand Theft Auto VI and it was in official footage: the Extended Look shows it played on street courts, with shots aimed and timed by hand rather than triggered as an animation. GTA Base, cataloguing the same material, reads it as feeding Jason's Focus attribute and counting toward full completion, and notes a hoop at his Leonida Keys house.
That sharpens what the Heat night is rather than contradicting it. The Narcos — Leonida's professional basketball team, the in-game Heat — are still something you look at, a logo on a cap and a jersey on a stranger. Nothing says you can play for them, or that Leonida has a league at all. The actual basketball in GTA VI is a pickup game on a corner. So the one sport in Rockstar's world that you get to hold is also the one it has rented a real franchise, a real arena and a national network to stage on launch eve — the game sells you the street version and televises the professional one.
Two things nobody has seen yet: the uniform and the court exist only as teasers, with details promised later at heat.com/vicecity, and a capsule of Vice City merchandise is already listed. Until the jersey is revealed, the most interesting thing on the floor that night will be the name on the front of it.
